In Memoriam Antonio Zampolli
I am very, very sorry to announce you the sudden death of Antonio
Zampolli, one of the founding fathers of ELSNET, and the driving
force behind numerous initiatives in the world of language and
speech technology. Antonio Zampolli died in a tragic fire
accident in his home in Pisa.
Those who have worked closely with him will remember him as a
creative scientist with a broad interest and a very strategic
mind, and as a good friend and colleague.
Antonio Zampolli was one of the people who have really changed
the world of language and speech technology, and it will be hard
to imagine how it will be to move on without his inspiring
presence.
I would like to offer my warmest condolences and sympathy to his
family, his friends and colleagues in Pisa, and to all those who
will be as shocked and devastated by this loss as I am.
It will be hard to carry on without him, but we will have to, and
by all his actions and initiatives he has made our way forward
easier than it would have been otherwise.
For a brief account of his role for the our community I would
like to refer to the obituary written by Hans
Uszkoreit for LT-World.
